Success Her Way

Jennifer Carson knew early on she wanted to have a job so she could earn her own money - her first thoughts about being employed began in high school. She wanted a job so she could earn her own money to use how she pleased while spending time with her friends. Jennifer’s school counselor told her there were programs available she could consider and soon she was introduced to Goodwill’s Supported Employment Program.

The Goodwill team met with Jennifer to develop a strategy that would help her find a job that met her needs. Additionally, the team contacted employers to determine job availability, helped Jennifer take the lead in scheduling interviews with potential employers, and prepare her for successful interviews. Additionally, job support continues for 120 days to ensure that both the employee and the employer are a successful match.

“I was so excited to go into the program because I was hoping they could find me a job and I could make some money,” said Jennifer. Jessica Clevinger with Goodwill was Jennifer’s staff lead. She scheduled an interview for Jennifer at Burger King. It was mutual from the beginning – the manager wanted Jennifer to work for her and Jennifer wanted to work at Burger King. Jessica shared “Jennifer is one of those rare individuals who is highly motivated, eager to work and was so easy to work within the program.”

When Jennifer was asked about her specific duties on the job, she stated, “I work as a lobby attendant, stocking the guest supplies, wiping down tables and chairs, and I greet guests. I am so proud to be making money for myself. Jessica and Tiffany with Goodwill were so helpful the entire way to helping me find my employment.”

Misty Farrow, Burger King Manager said “I can show Jennifer something once and she does it. She learns fast. Quite honestly, I wish I had more employees like Jennifer.”

When asked what Jennifer liked most about her job and what she might see in her future, Jennifer said, “I like seeing the people and getting to know them. I’m a people person. I’m very proud of my job and would like to eventually train and coach people on how to do my job and do it the right way.”

Congratulations to Jennifer on her success!
