Knox County Residents Recycle Old Computers

On Saturday, January 12th, Knox County residents lined-up to recycle their old computers, laptops, parts, peripherals, and other electronic items. No fees were charged to drop off equipment, but monetary donations were accepted to benefit Goodwill Industries-Knoxville, Inc., Children's Hospital and the Optimist Club of West Knoxville. Over 70 tons of materials were recycled during this event.

Why is it important to recycle these materials? Computer monitors and televisions contain significant amounts of lead. Printed circuit boards contain hazardous metals such as lead, chromium, cadmium and mercury. Switches and relays contain mercury. PCBs are often found in televisions and computers made before the early 1980s. By recycling this equipment, you are keeping hazardous materials out of waste water.
